Months 1 to 3

The minimum. Your 12 months start the day you make your first payment. We build your site, and it goes live once you approve it. Leave before month 3 and the rest of those three months is still due.

After month 3

Cancel any time, effective at the end of the paid month, and owe nothing more. The prepaid last month isn't refunded, and the site comes down. Your domain, text and photos are always yours.

Stay all 12

Month 12 is already paid. You get the finished site's files to keep and host anywhere for your business. Stock photos we licensed may not transfer; we'll tell you which.

Month 13 onward: keep it with us on the Care & Hosting plan of your choice, from $250 a month, charged automatically each month until you cancel. If you don't choose, it stays on Essentials. Or take your site elsewhere and we'll help you move it.

Add-ons

Need more? Add it once.

Groundwork covers one to three pages and a request form. If your business needs more, add any of these at the start or later on. Each is a one-time fee, quoted in writing before any work starts, plus any sales tax and card fee that apply. Your $297 a month doesn't change.

  • Extra pages

Each page after the first three, for another service, a location, or your story.

  • Online booking

Customers ask for a day and time on your site, and you confirm. It's built into the site, not an outside booking service, so it adds no tracking.

  • A photo gallery

Up to 40 of your own photos, in one place.

  • A second language

Your pages in a second language, for customers who read it more easily than English.

  • Logo redraw

If all you have is a small or blurry copy, we redraw it so it stays sharp.

Not available on Groundwork: online shops and order forms. To sell online, you'd need a custom site, starting at $1,200.

The math

Less than a custom site with our Care plan, in year one.

Groundwork

No build fee + 12 × $297

$3,564

Care & Hosting Essentials included all year.

Custom site with our Care plan

$1,200 build + 12 × $250 Care Essentials

$4,200

Care & Hosting is optional on a custom site.

The difference

In year one

$636

Less with Groundwork, and nothing to pay for a build up front. Both before tax, card fees and domain registration.

How it compares

Three ways to pay monthly for a website. Ask each one what you keep when you stop paying.

What's typical of each kind of plan. Every provider is different, so ask each one what you keep, what you pay on top, and who answers when something breaks.

Do-it-yourself builderYou do, evenings and weekends
Software-bundle agency planThe agency, often from a template
After a year of paying
GroundworkYou keep the site's files, licensed for your business. Keep it with us or host it anywhere

Software-bundle agency planUsually lives inside their software; ask what you keep if you leave
Your monthly bill

Do-it-yourself builderA plan fee, plus your own time, plus paid add-ons

GroundworkNone. No ad pixels, analytics or third-party tracking scripts
Do-it-yourself builderBuilt-in analytics and cookies are common
Software-bundle agency planTracking and chat scripts are often part of the package

Examples

Three businesses, three different sites.

Shown on a phone, because that's where your customers will see it. All three businesses are fictitious, made by Velcrest to show what Groundwork looks like.

These three are from a library of 26 starting designs.

They cover the kinds of business we hear from most: trades and home services; health, beauty and wellness; professional offices; and shops, cafés and local services. Tell us what you do and we'll send you the one that suits you best. If yours isn't listed, we start from the closest fit, and if another look suits you better, pick that one instead.

Straight answers

The questions owners ask us.

What if I want out early?

The first three months are the minimum: leave before month 3 and the rest of those three months is still due, so the least anyone pays is the $594 first payment plus months 2 and 3, plus tax. After that, cancel any time, effective at the end of the month you've paid for, and you owe nothing more. If you cancel before month 12, the last month you prepaid at the start isn't refunded, and the site comes down. Your domain, text and photos stay yours.

Is it a template?

It starts from one of our 26 existing designs, chosen with you to suit your business, so it's quick to set up. Then everything on it is about you: your name, your town, your services, your photos and your colors. If you want a design nobody else has, that's our custom service, starting at $1,200.

Can I add booking or more pages later?

Yes. Booking, pages after the first three, a gallery and the other add-ons can go in at the start or later. Each is a one-time fee, quoted in writing before any work starts, and your $297 a month stays the same. An add-on is new work, so it doesn't use up one of your two changes a month, and it becomes part of your site, so it comes down with the site if you leave before month 12 and is yours with it after. Groundwork can't take an online shop or an order form; those need a custom site.

Do I own it?

Stay twelve months, or pay out the year, and you get the finished site's files with a permanent license to use, change and host them anywhere for your business. The design underneath stays ours, so it can't be resold or reused for another business. Your domain is in your name from day one, either way.

Can you promise more calls or a spot on Google?

No one honestly can. We set up everything Google reads about your business, make the site fast on phones, and give customers a simple way to send you a request. You'll see every request that comes in.

What happens after twelve months?

Keep it with us on the Care & Hosting plan of your choice, from $250 a month, charged automatically each month until you cancel. If you don't choose, it stays on Essentials. Or take it elsewhere and we'll help you move it.

Can I earn anything by referring a business?

Yes, an extra page. When a business you send our way names you as it signs up for Groundwork and pays through its first three months, we add one new page to your site, written and built for you. This is for active Groundwork clients. The reward is a page of website work, with no cash value and no plan credit, and it can't be transferred. If you recommend us publicly, say that you may receive a reward. Full terms are in our Terms, section 21.
