Questions
The things people actually ask.
How much does a website cost in Morgantown?
A custom website from Velcrest, a web design studio in Morgantown, WV, starts at $1,200 for one to three pages, with one fixed price in writing before any work starts. Would you rather pay monthly? Groundwork is $297 a month, $594 to start (first and last month). Hosting is not part of the website price; Care & Hosting starts at $250/mo. The details are on the pricing page.
How long does a website take?
It depends on the scope, so no number of weeks is published here. Your target dates are written into your project agreement before work starts. They are estimates rather than guarantees, and the thing that moves them most is content — the faster your text, photos, and feedback come back, the sooner you launch.
What do I need to provide?
Your logo if you have one, any photos you want used, and a rough sense of what each page should say. If you do not have polished copy, that is normal — we structure the pages around what you tell us, and writing the wording can be added to your quote. If you have no usable photos, we will tell you honestly rather than filling the site with stock images that make you look like everyone else.
Do you host the site?
We can, as a separate monthly plan — hosting is not part of the website price. Care & Hosting starts at $250/mo and covers managed hosting, SSL, automatic backups, uptime monitoring, and small content updates on request. Plans differ by how quickly issues on your site are handled, and your plan is quoted with your estimate so you can opt in or out. You are not required to host with us — the site is yours and can move to another host. If you would rather host it elsewhere, we will hand over everything needed to do that.
Who owns the website when it is done?
You do, on final payment. Your domain is registered in your name wherever possible, and the code, design files and content made for you are yours. Fonts, photos and code libraries come under their owners' licenses, and any general-purpose components we reuse come with a permanent license to use and change them. There is no proprietary platform holding it hostage and no clause that makes leaving expensive. (That is how a custom site works. Groundwork, our monthly website plan, has its own terms.) If you ever want to move to another developer, you take the whole thing with you.
What about SEO?
On a new site build, the search foundation is included in the price: clean heading structure, page titles and descriptions written for real searches, descriptive image alt text, fast load times, a sitemap, and Google Search Console connected. If we are redesigning or repairing a website you already have, that search work is an additional charge, shown as its own line in your estimate. Ongoing SEO — content, local citations, link building, monthly reporting — is separate work in either case, and we will say plainly whether you need it rather than selling it by default. No one can honestly promise a ranking, and we do not.
Can I edit the site myself?
Yes, if that is what you want. Tell us during discovery and we will build in a simple editor so you can change text, swap photos, and add posts without touching code. It is quoted with your estimate. If you would rather not deal with it, leave it out — small changes are covered under the Care plan, and most owners find sending a two-line email faster than logging in.
Do you redesign existing websites?
Yes. We will look at the website you have, tell you honestly whether it needs a redesign or just repair, and keep anything worth keeping — copy, photos, and your existing page addresses, so links people already use keep working. If your current site is fine and only needs work, we will say so rather than selling you a rebuild you do not need.
How do payments work?
On a custom site: a 50% deposit at kickoff — plus the first month of Care & Hosting if you opted in to a plan — and the remaining 50% on launch day, with the full price fixed in writing before any work begins. The site does not launch until all fees have been paid. Care & Hosting, if you opt in, is billed monthly and can be cancelled any time. Groundwork is paid monthly instead: $594 to start (first and last month), then $297 a month, with a 3-month minimum; see Groundwork, our monthly website plan.
How can I pay?
Payments are handled by Stripe: we accept all major credit and debit cards, or payment from a US bank account (ACH). You enter your card or bank account on Stripe's own secure page, so we never see or store the full number. A bank payment can take several business days to reach us, and work starts once the funds have cleared on our end. We do not accept wire transfers, checks, PayPal or Cash App. A card processing fee may be added to payments made by credit card, to cover what Stripe charges us to accept the card. If it applies, it is shown as its own line before you pay, it is never more than that cost and never more than 3%, and it is never added to a debit or prepaid card, or to a bank transfer.
Is sales tax included in the price?
Prices do not include sales tax. Where tax applies, it is shown as its own line before you pay.
Do you work with businesses outside Morgantown?
Yes. Velcrest is a web design studio based in Morgantown, West Virginia, and works with businesses anywhere in the United States. Projects run the same way wherever you are. See our web design services.
Do I need to meet in person?
No. Projects run by phone, email and video call. If you are near Morgantown and would rather sit down in person, we can do that too.
